DESIGNER’S NOTES:

Baju kurung is a traditional Malay costume worn both on formal occasions and as informal everyday wear. It consists of a loose-fitting knee-length blouse, worn over a pair of pants (for men) or a long skirt/sarong (for women). The baju kurung telok belanga was one of the earlier versions of the baju kurung. Traditionally worn by Malay men, this version drew its name from the Telok Belanga (or Telok Blangah) area in Singapore, which used to be the centre of the Johor Sultanate.

Che Zahara binte Noor Mohamed was a Malay activist who worked towards women's and children's rights in Singapore between 1947 to 1960s. She was the first Malay women in Singapore to fight for modern women's rights and the founder of the first Muslim women's welfare organization in Singapore, the Malay Women's Welfare Association (MWWA). Mostly seen in her baju kurung as it is the traditional wear for the Malay community, the roomy and modest cut of the baju means it is also comfortable giving it an ease of move for the busy activist in her daily work.

Innovation & Details: The Reversible Baju Coat

Converting the baju kurung into an outer wear, while retaining its two main features; the Telok Blangah round neckline followed by two side pesak, or wings, maintaining it’s signature structured and modest generous cutting that remain kind for all figure shapes.

A versatile, economical and multi-functional modern touch added to the baju kurung by transforming it into a reversible coat.

Seen here worn with The Strapless Playsuit.
