Singapore Stories 2020
ABOUT SINGAPORE STORIES
Organised by Textile and Fashion Federation Singapore (TaFF) as part of its mission to promote, support, and develop the local fashion industry, Singapore Stories is a fashion design competition that invites designers to explore what it means to create a Singapore-inspired capsule collection in their design field (apparel or accessories). It gives finalists the opportunity to consult with renowned experts, and stand a chance to collaborate with internationally acclaimed platforms and companies.
The competition was created with the careful consideration of how TaFF can create an event that has long-lasting impact, and relevance in the modern, globalised fashion world by creating a unique opportunity for brands to launch new collections and challenge their design acumen.
In line with the 2020 Met Gala theme 'About Time', Singapore Stories 2020 invites designers to examine the timeline of Singapore fashion - celebrating the past and interpreting the future.
TaFF are looking for creative, innovative design that reflects Singapore in a global context. The collection should reflect the designers' ingenuity and interpretation of the theme while maintain their personal fashion design aesthetic and especially excited by designs that profoundly address one or more of key themes of Technology & Innovation, Sustainability and Asian Craftsmanship.

FINALIST - NUDE FEMME BY ADELYN PUTRI
For Singapore Stories 2020, designer Adelyn Putri, pays tribute to the tough ladies of yesteryears - the silent heroes who have made invaluable contributions to Singapore's early developments and women in the society.
She draws inspiration from the strength and values of the Samsui Women, Singapore’s female activist, Che Zahara binte Noor Mohamed, and the First Female Assistant Superintendent of Singapore Police Force, Mary Quintal, who’ve transformed and triumphed over discrimination on gender equality, leaving behind a beaten path for other female officers to follow.
This collection envisions the lifestyle and fashion aesthetics of these strong empowering women, re-imagined as acclaimed architects, directors, executives and more, living and carving a successful life today, tomorrow and the future.
The idea is to showcase a spectrum of women in Singapore's history from the strong labourers to the white collared workers, each with her unique 'fashion' roots and exploring that with a more creative approach to convey a conscious multiracial Singapore during her pre-independence to colonial and cultural heritage.
Iconic key pieces are re-invented and interpreted into contemporary essentials, taking you from that zoom-call to pub crawl effortlessly.
Colour palette for her collections are muted in shades of blue & lilac, neutral tones and a vibrant touch of red from the headdress of the Samsui women. Arising to help change the fashion industry for the better, she created her collection with sustainable fabrics and eco-friendly leather.
"Highlights of this collection include The Samsui Jumpsuit and Handbag, taking inspiration from the Samsui women of the 20th century, Adelyn’s design modernises the outfit for the modern working woman, maintaining the same colour scheme in denim, while tailoring a more sleek, feminine figure. The iconic red headgear has been repurposed into stylish leather handbag." ~ bakchormeeboy.com
